And perhaps we can’t help but ask ourselves: If that day were to come, would we be ready?

In reality, when a loss happens, there is often very little time left to grieve. Because within 72 hours after a loved one passes, families are often required to make at least 87 decisions.

There are many logistics need to be handled, including:

gather documents, search for information, and contact the necessary parties;notify relatives and friends, arrange the process, and confirm expenses;and even answer many questions they have never considered before:

Cremation or burial?Where should the service be held? Who will be the elebrant? What music should be played? What kind of eulogy should be written?Where should the resting place be? What should be inscribed on the tomb stone?

All of this must often be handled at a time when a person is least composed, least willing to think, and least prepared.

Perhaps the most difficult situation is this: amid the rush and confusion, decisions are made hastily, ending with a helpless “just keep it simple,” only to be followed later by lingering regret—“If only I had known what to do back then.”

Some decisions are meant to be made in moments of calm.

In Canada, older people are increasingly starting to plan for themselves and bring their children to funeral homes & cemeteries for consultation. Likewise, young generations also plan for themselves and their parents for this eventuality and do not want to be unprepared.

Pre-Planning is not a taboo—it is a responsibility. What would otherwise be an overwhelming set of 87 decisions can instead become organized, clear, and fully manageable.
